Together they crafted a marriage that she would never forget.
Gweneviere Mann and Yasir Salem were the first interview I did for Committed. They were the couple in the pilot episode that we created for Apple to see if this should be a podcast at all. I think about their interview, their wisdom and their love nearly every day and that’s why it’s so important for me to update you on their story.
Shortly after we aired their episode, Forget It, Gwen was diagnosed with a rare type of lung cancer. Gwen was a fighter. You’ll remember from her episode that Gwen beat a brain tumor that led to her short-term amnesia. After her brain tumor she became a marathon runner. She enrolled in Juilliard. She lived every day to the absolute fullest, even knowing she might not remember all of the details.
She fought the cancer, but ultimately she lost. Gwen passed away on July 22nd.
We received an email from Yasir telling us that he was holding her and telling her that he loved her as she passed.
Gwen had so many plans for the next year. She was enrolling in the writing program at Columbia and hoped to write a book about her brain tumor and amnesia. She was going to do a triathlon. They’d just gotten a piano in their house so Gwen could perform and compose music. Yasir wants to ensure that Gwen’s legacy lives on through the creation of the Gweneviere Mann Foundation. It will provide funds for research for new therapies for the lung cancer she had (non-small cell lung cancer adenocarcinoma) and the brain tumor that she beat. You can visit their website here and contribute to their Go Fund Me here.
In the weeks before she passed Gwen listened to her episode on Committed over and over. She cherished being able to remember her relationship with Yasir. We don’t want to get into the habit of re-running episodes, but we know that our listeners care about the people whose stories we tell. We have added new material, memories from friends and family of Gwen, as well as Yasir to the episode Forget It and will be airing that this week in honor of Gwen.
